Pioneering

I’ve been choosing a word for the year ahead for about 5 years now. For the last 2 I’ve worked through Susannah Conway‘s (IG: @susannahconway) free 5 day Find Your Word process.

I don’t set New Year resolutions, but I do sometimes set intentions for my life and for my creative practices. Having set my intentions, each year, I also try to find a single word that encapsulates what I want more of in my life. It is a one-word all encompassing intention. A positive word or phrase that aligns with my values and perspective on life.

I WONDER WHAT MY WORD OF THE YEAR IS?

I’m not really in the right place to set intentions for 2021 yet – I’m still processing 2020! So I’ve just chosen a word as a guide. I’ve chosen “Pioneering” for 2021 supported by additional words of Change, Freshness and Newness. For me pioneering means being resilient, original, inventive. I’m in a One Year from a Numerology point of view, so that means new beginnings, perspectives, opportunities, understandings, connections and ways of being and showing up in the world. All of which means ‘change‘!

Recent years…

In 2018, my word was “open” and it served me well, keeping me focused on my personal growth. In 2019, Wonder. Last year my word was “blossom” – hmmm. The impact of COVID and a family death caused me to go inside to a dark place rather than blossoming! But maybe, just maybe, I blossomed with respect to my “art”. I discovered that I am an artist as well as a photographer through the 100 Day Art Project that I did from September to early January. I know that as 2020 wore on, I started setting words for different times of the year like Patience for 1st quarter; Acceptance for 2nd half of the year and Curiosity for the last quarter.

Making it official…

As Susannah suggests, it is helpful to make the word official in some way, so that it stays in our thoughts. This year I’ve made a small piece of art with the words, published on Instagram and now, here on my blog. But most fun of all was digging through my collection of beach rocks and painting it with my words! It’s a tactile and physical reminder of the words!

Is this something you do or have tried? Does it work for you? Until next time,

I’ve been choosing a word of the year for a while now, I think around 2014. Some of them have been: Create, believe, courage, change. Last year was drive and although I meant it as in motivational drive, it turns out that I ended up driving my son to work everyday because he had a seizure and could not drive (he’s okay but still not driving yet). This year I have chosen Flow. I know I want to shift some things but I want it to be a smooth transition. I use Susannah’s method too! Isn’t she great? I like your word.
