** Let me ask you a question. ** How do you learn to be a good football or netball player? How do you become a great guitar player or dancer? You practice, right? Every day. *** Take the poll in my story about how you use maths every day. The same applies to maths. Children can make their brains stronger by exercising the brain and practicing maths every day in the same way you do for your sport or other hobbies. So doing assigned homework, reading through notes or textbooks, practicing examples, talking to parents about what they've learnt are some examples. By taking part in my tutoring sessions, children will discover more ways to practice maths, even if they don't have homework! I'll be posting more about my tutoring programme over the next few days. if you want to know more in the meantime or you'd like to discuss the programme in more detail, please get in touch. I'd love to hear from you. #isleofwight #IOW #mathsisfun #IOWmathsisfun #growthmindset #resilience #ilovemistakes #mistakesmakemybraingrow
Paying it Forward Have you seen the movie Pay It Forward? As part of a class assignment young student creates a plan for "paying forward" favours and he affects the life of his struggling single mother and sets in motion an unprecedented wave of human kindness. I use this same idea in my tutoring classes. I ask the child to talk about or teach someone at home (mom, dad, siblings, grandparents, cousins, child minder, guardian) something they have learnt in the session - a game, a riddle are examples. In this way, the child is talking about maths (making sense of it in their own minds) and sharing the fun they’ve had in the session. Want to know more? Keep an eye out for more posts or get in touch. I'd love to hear from you. #isleofwight #IOW #mathsisfun #IOWmathsisfun #growthmindset #resilience #playingwithnumbers
So... you wanted to know more about Multiplicative Thinking. It is one of the Big Ideas in maths and is seen as one that has the most bearing on how successfully we will understand our high school maths especially ratio, fractions, decimals, percentages and algebra. *** Leave me an emoji to represent your feelings about this! Good, bad, still confused, an aha moment ... ______________________ Here is a formal definition: Conceptual understanding of the relationship between multiplication and division, numbers of equal groups, factors and multiples, and the various properties of multiplication. Swipe to see more... And that means? Quite often, at school, when we start to learn multiplication, we learn about "Groups of" or we learn to skip count (count in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s etc). These methods make us think "Additively". We keep adding another group of something each time. The focus is on the GROUP. Often, we are taught multiplication and division separately, when in fact the two ideas are interrelated. __________________________ A better way to introduce, visualise and learn multiplication and division together is by using an "Array" (a grid). This has loads of advantages at this stage and later because it connects to a whole bunch of other maths ideas including fractions! With the array, the focus is on the PRODUCT (i.e. 12) By arranging the groups into an array, we can see three quantities – the total (12), the number of groups (4) and the number in each group (3) as factors and multiples. Arrays also helps visualise the structural relationship between multiplication & division i.e. 12 can be split into 3 groups of 4 or 4 groups of 3 __________________________
I asked. You answered. You wanted to know more about Multiplicative Thinking. Watch my feed tomorrow for more info! Thanks for engaging with my poll - it was good to see what you want to make sense of. #mathsisfun #iowmathisfun
The second pillar of my tutoring approach is helping your child to develop an "I can do this" type of approach to maths – helping your child become more confident, resilient and to build a more positive mindset towards maths. You may have heard of Carol Dweck's work on Growth Mindsets. There is a lot of research (done by neuroscientists) which tells us that mistakes are helpful for brain growth and connectivity. If we are not struggling, we are not learning. The research shows that our brains grow when we make a mistake. Synapses fire and new connections (neural pathways) are made. If we always do our work correctly, there is no physical brain growth. Brain growth comes from experiencing struggle and making sense of a mistake. As parents and teachers, our first instinct is to shield children from challenges, mistakes, and struggles. This is doing more harm than good. We need our children to make mistakes in maths and to view mistakes as opportunities for new learning and for physically growing our children’s brains. How do I do this? I think mistakes are very important – they are not something to be afraid of - they help us to grow our brains and learn new things. I will encourage your child to talk to me about their mathematical thinking and how they approach solving a problem / working something out. Using this approach, we will work through mistakes together and this process will help them to build their confidence and encourage them to keep trying. In my ongoing work with children, I have seen how this shift in attitude helps the child with maths but also filters through into so many other aspects of their schooling. There are still a few more introductory posts to come, but if you'd like to hear more, please get in touch. I'd love to hear from you.
BUT ISN’T MATHS HARD AND JUST A BUNCH OF RULES TO BE LEARNT? Yes, there is a lot of that in maths. But if we encourage our children from a young age to have a love of playing with numbers and basic maths ideas, then this can help with UNDERSTANDING all the rules, rather than memorising them. ----- ❓Share your answers to the puzzle questions! ----- Every day we face problems that we have not come across before which require creative problem solving. This is how we should be encouraging our children to look at maths problems - not as loads of rules to be memorised, but from a perspective of understanding. A lot can be done with maths as mental play, creative problem solving, playing about with ideas - intriguing and full of fun. I'll be posting more about my tutoring programme over the next few days. if you want to know more in the meantime or you'd like to discuss the programme in more detail, please get in touch. I'd love to hear from you. #isleofwight #IOW #mathsisfun #IOWmathsisfun #playingwithnumbers #numberfun
Maths is based around “Big Ideas” (there's a definition at the end of the post). There are a lot of different thoughts about what those big ideas are, but those shown in the image are commonly agreed on for primary school. 🙂 --- Go to my story and tell me which you'd like to know more about. --- A lot of being able to do maths is about understanding these big ideas and how they connect to each other. In my tutoring programme, my primary objective is to work with these big ideas to improve your child’s understanding of maths concepts. I want to help children make sense of maths, therefore I don't drill or offer repetitive memorisation exercises. I prefer to really get to know your child and customise the session around their specific needs. I work hard to make them feel comfortable to that they will feel they can talk to me about where they are struggling. I do this through an informal, fun environment, using simple games and resources, puzzles and other activities that focus on sense making. I know from experience that these kinds of activities are non-threatening and enable children to engage with the maths in a fun and informal way; to make sense of it, practice it and use it. I hope you will continue to read these posts over the next week for lots more information about my tutoring programme. Or if you want to know more now or you'd like to discuss the programme in more detail, please get in touch. I'd love to hear from you. --- #isleofwight #IOW #mathsisfun #IOWmathsisfun Definition of a big idea from Cambridge Mathematics: "A 'big idea' is defined as a statement of an idea that is central to the learning of mathematics, one that links numerous mathematical understanding into a coherent whole." (Cambridge Mathematics, Big Ideas)

My low stress, interactive and fun approach to tutoring maths will help children to cope with exams and tests by giving them access to different ways of thinking about maths and confidence to try and persevere. I do not prep children generically for specific tests or exams - rather, I like to build a rapport with the child and work holistically on developing broader aspects of their mathematics such as developing number sense, conceptual understanding and a growth mindset and encouraging children to practice and use maths as much as they can. #isleofwight #IOW #mathsisfun #IOWmathsisfun #growthmindset #mumbersense I will be sharing a series of posts over the next week, which will focus on these different areas to give you an idea of my tutoring offering.
